SALIENT Partners Attend LightMe Final Conference

SALIENT Partner CTAG and related intiative representatives at the LightMe conference.

As the EU-funded LightMe Project is coming to an end in June 2023, the project organised and hosted an international conference on the premises of the Polytechnic University of Milan in Milan, Italy last week (11 & 12 May 2023).

The two-day conference focused on on all things lightweight materials and the advancement of industry regarding the progress on materials. This conference gathered technical presentations form academia, industry, and open innovation test beds in the field of lightweight materials. The conference also presented a great moment to create business opportunities and disseminate the SALIENT project objectives and work plans to the industry.

The SALIENT consortium seized the opportunity to present two full papers and hold a dedicated project presentation as keynotes during the conference. The full programme included many related and sister projects and initiatives of SALIENT and marked the start of a range of different events, fairs and conferences the consortium is planning to attend.

The papers were both authored by Academic and Scientific Coordinator of SALIENT, University of Northumbria:

  1. “Optimizing the bumper beam and crash box of a vehicle with shape memory alloys for crashworthiness” (Mohab Elmarakbi, Ahmed Elmasry, Yongqing Fu, Ahmed Elmarakbi)

  2. “Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) based Composites for Automotive Crashworthiness Applications” (Engy Ghoniem, Ahmed Elmasry, Wiyao Azoti, Mohab Elmarakbi, Yongqing Fu, Ahmed Elmarakbi)

Many of the 6 liaison projects of SALIENT were also present at the conference and it has been decided that SALIENT’s Exploitation and Liaison Manager BAX & Company will organise a joint follow-up call to plan shared collaborations both for communication & dissemination and on a technical and knowledge exchange level.

In sum, the international conference proved to be a big success and gathered a relevant crowd of attendees, presenters, exhibitors and representatives.
